Beauty 101: How to Choose the Perfect Highlighter for Your Skin Tone
Highlighting (or strobing) is no longer a makeup fad or
seasonal trend, highlighting here to stay and there is no one-size-fits-all in
the highlighter department. There are endless number of shimmery options out
there, so how do you know which one is right for your skin tone? Read on to find
out how to choose the right highlighter shade that’s perfect for you:
Fair to Light Skin
Tones - Those with pale to light skin tones should opt for highlighters
with a pearlescent, icy-silver or champagne sheen. The light pigment adds just
enough radiance to your complexion without making you look like an Eskimo.
Anything darker and the product can come off as a little less “glow” and a
little more “faux.” I recommend: NYX Illuminator in Ritualistic, L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Powder Glow Illuminator in
C302 Ice, or Becca Shimmering Skin
Perfector in Moonstone
Medium to Olive Skin
Tones - To keep your complexion from looking too frosty, warmer skin tones
pair well with highlighters that have peach or gold undertones. The hint of
color is just enough to give you that sun-kissed glow! I recommend: NYX Illuminator in Magnetic,
Urban Decay Naked Flushed in Streak, or Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal
Deep Skin Tones -
Rich variations of rose gold or bronze work wonders on deeper complexions. Just
be sure to look for options that pack a ton of pigment and steer clear of
frosty, opalescent shades, as they can cause the skin to look gray instead of
lit-from-within! Keep your focus on warm hues. I recommend: L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator in W102
Golden, Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer in
#11 or Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Rose Gold
Once you find the right highlighter shade for your skin
tone, it’s time to bring out your cheekbones (your cheekbones are located at
the highest part of the outer cheek, just below the eye).
Using a fluffy eye shadow, concealer or fan brush, sweep the
highlighter directly on your cheekbones, just above your blush and blend to
create a beautiful lit-from-within glow!
