How to Prevent Hair Damage
Damaged hair is something that we all deal with at some
point in our lives. Spending too much time in the sun, brushing your hair when
it’s wet, and the overuse of hot tools are just a few major factors that could
be traumatizing your tresses. We’ve all experienced brushing our hair and
seeing all the breakage in our bathroom sinks. Split ends and breakage may seem
unavoidable, but there are ways to mend what seems to be irreversible damage.
If your locks need a little TLC, I have listed below some tips that will help
to repair your hair:
Weather The Elements
Exposing your hair to the elements during harsh seasons like
winter and summer can do a number on your hair. Sun exposure (especially during
the summer months) not only affects your skin but can damage your hair as well.
If you know you will be spending long periods of time in the summer sun, spritz
on a hair sunscreen before leaving the house. Like summertime, the cold, windy
and rainy months can be harsh on your hair as well. Using a deep conditioning
hair mask once a week or using a nourishing leave-in conditioner can help
replace the moisture that your hair loses during the winter months.
You Are What You Eat
We all know that proper nutrition is great for our bodies,
but it’s also great for your hair too. Make sure you are eating a well-balanced
diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, lean protein, nuts
& low-fat dairy every day to keep your hair as healthy as your body.
Beat The Heat
We all know that putting heat on your hair can cause damage.
Now I am not saying to not use a blow dryer, but give your hair a break from
time to time by letting it air dry before styling. If you must use a blow
dryer, I recommend letting your hair air dry about 80 percent of the way then
blow dry your hair on a cool setting to finish it off. If you will be styling
your hair with hot tools (curling or flat iron), consider applying a heat
protectant before styling to protect your hair from the damaging heat of the
hot tools. Also, constantly back combing your hair or wearing a ponytail that
is to tight can cause breakage as well, so let your hair down, literally!
I hope these hair care tips have been helpful and
informative and until next time, stay happy, healthy and beautiful.
